In a recent survey of 2,000 small business owners, half entrenched in the tech or retail sectors, 40% are cautiously eyeing 2024 as a "make or break" year for their business. This cautious outlook is fueled by concerns ranging from economic instability to declining sales, rapidly changing technology, persistent supply chain issues, and the ongoing challenge of retaining skilled employees.
Despite the looming uncertainties, a 49% of respondents reported that their businesses surpassed expectations in 2023, a testament to the spirit that characterizes entrepreneurs. As we move into 2024, it is essential to dissect the challenges and opportunities at hand, focusing on the role of technological solutions.
Proactive Strategies
Small business owners are not resigned to fate; as 74% actively take measures to address their concerns. Key worries include inflation and economic conditions (47%), the imperative to raise prices (32%), and heightened competition (24%). Notably, 43% are actively exploring new technologies to boost productivity and efficiency, underscoring a proactive approach to obstacles.

In 2023, a noteworthy quarter of small business owners embraced new technology, with 41% directing their attention explicitly to productivity or collaboration tools. Respondents are optimistic about the transformative potential of these technological enhancements, anticipating improvements in communication with customers (70%), internal team collaboration (55%), information sharing (54%), and even a streamlined usage of software tools (40%).

Regardless of the sector, productivity and collaboration tools can be a key driver of businesses' growth and productivity."

Despite the persistent challenges, 2023 stands out as a year of achievements for small businesses. By the close of the year, respondents reported earning new customers (47%), turning a profit (30%), and incorporating new technologies (26%). Among these technologies were AI (50%), productivity or collaboration tools (41%), and communication tools (34%). An impressive 75% express confidence that the changes made in 2023 will continue to yield positive results throughout 2024.
The Future: Budgets, Tech Upgrades, and Resilience
As small business owners peer into the future, 60% are gearing up to increase their budgets in 2024, half earmarking these funds for technology and infrastructure. The survey indicated, 35% are eager to implement new tech or upgrade existing systems, focusing strongly on productivity and collaboration tools (49%) and other software tools (53%).
Jaime DeLanghe concludes, "The insights from this research highlight the forward-looking aspirations of small businesses, showcasing their remarkable resilience and adaptability.
